Woodlands Christmas Tree Team

A tradition of giving continues

Inspired by a lean Christmas in her childhood where money was scarce but love was abundant, The Woodlands Hospital Emergency Department Manager Toni Rogers knows the joy a Christmas tree can bring to a family facing hard times.

Seven years ago as a member of the Patient Care Council, then staff nurse Toni proposed a plan to give back to families in need in Montgomery County, which management quickly approved. Each year since, the hospital purchases an artificial tree for each department that would like to participate. Members of the department select a theme and decorate their tree. In early December, all of the trees are displayed in a common area for staff and visitors to enjoy. For the nominal fee of $0.25 each, anyone can cast a vote for their favorite tree. Once all the votes are received, the hospital hosts an auction after which the winner can select the tree of their choice to display in their own home or donate back to the program. Proceeds from the votes and auction support the cost of the trees, and any excess funds are designated for the nursing scholarship fund.

In collaboration with local nonprofit agencies, Chaplain Services then coordinates the delivery of the carefully wrapped trees to local families in need. This year, 49 families experienced humankindness when the trees were delivered to brighten their homes for the holidays.

Toni is passionate that the program continues. "As someone who feels alone in their trials receives one of these special trees, they realize that they aren't alone and that others care. It's uplifting and this gift exemplifies our ministry's mission and what we mean by humankindness," she explains.

Last year's favorite tree, a Candyland theme, was decorated by Case Management. One tree contained a very special ornament, a $300 gift card donated by the members of 4 East. It was gifted to an older couple who had adopted their five grandchildren.
